Otaki

Despite of the feeling I should work non-stop even on the weekends I decided to go for a little tramp this weekend. Saying “weekend” is a bit disproportionate. We left Palmy on Saturday at 5pm. So we arrived at the campground at 7pm. I don’t want to blame only the French, but I kind of now why they never started a war. They were always too late and the other parties just started without them being sick of waiting. Anyway it was still worth it. We went to the Otaki Forks near Otaki (both named after the river Otaki as you probably figured). Otaki Forks is the main western entrance to the Tararua Forest Park. I wasn’t to convinced as if you pass Otaki on the way to Wellington it doesn’t make you want to stop there (Unless you wanna buy cheap woman underwear at the factory sell which I usually don’t). But as always in New Zealand you need to know where to go and look off the beaten track/main roads.

Carel and J-Lo provided a superb dinner and we drank some cheap vegan wine (3L cardbox for $16). But I soon figured out that camping in a 3 person tent on your own doesn’t keep you warm at night. Even eating curry before and wearing long johns which I accidentally bought (I wanted a long sleeve shirt, but back home I discovered I only got two long-sleeves which were stitched together). At least I wasn’t wet. Dorbert, from the mountains of Paris, wanted to show us his Bushmen qualities and ended up falling in the river he was trying to pass (in Paris they have bridges).

Because I was quite cold and the NZ Cadet school (which camped there as well) decided to drill their new cannon fodder at 7am I got up early and we had an early start (at about noon) to do the Waitewaewae Track to the Loghauler. We didn’t made it to the loghauler though. But it was quite enjoyable and as always I ask myself why I didn’t do that more often. I really like the green of the native bush here. And one day I want to do the complete walk through the Tararua forest park. Just from the map it looks amazing.

PS: Palmy lost the cross! Unfortunately they planning to put up a new one.

Quoi!?!
Hou! Arne, you're unfair here. The French were ready. Should i remind you we were waiting for the Belgian and Chilean.
I know you wrote "I don't want to blame only the French" but at the end, you are only blaming us.
Hey, i'm working hard here to contradict this reputation we have, so please, a bit of recognition when we deserve it!

very funny post, by the way ; >

Yeah, I'll stick up for the French. After all, it was D who organised the memorable surprise party at Bennydale. Anyway, from your logic ("...they were always too late..."), you should have known and therefore taken advantage of their reliable unreliability to occupy yourself with other activities, like searching for warm clothing... ;P (Note: eating curry is a good way to ensure you're on your own in your 3-person tent).

Glad you enjoyed the bush, even if it was the overpopulated Tararua. Be warned, though: travelling by map always looks wonderful.

And yeah, what D said about the post.

@ Pete: Well, being German and therefore very organized (Yeah right)I spend my time to buy some polypropylene long sleeves in case it turned cold. By a mean trick of the company, which is selling "made in China by probably 14 years old kids"-tramping gear for way too much money, I ended up with long johns. They put them in the same box as the long sleeves! Bastards!
Your Curry theory is wrong, as the others had Curry too. I guess it has mor to do that I am single.
You think the Tararua 4 day walk is only beautiful on the map?? The weather is quite unpredictable?!

@ D.: I recongnize that you are trying hard!!! I just don't want to imagine how it would be otherwise! ;-P
